Our First Attempt at SEO

Disclaimer: this post is more of a plea for help rather than an actual, intelligent, informative post. Although, some may consider it informative in that we tell you how we completely missed the point of SEO and should be banned from the use of any optimization software.

Here’s what we did…

After installing the WordPress blog publishing software Mike and I searched for plugins to add to our site. We found one labeled “All-in-one SEO pack” by uberdose. Next, we checked uberdose’s website for any information about how to use the plugin. We didn’t find much on how to physically use the plugin to optimize search results, so I figured it was probably as simple as filling in the blanks that were provided in our blog post-editor. So, that’s what I did. I just filled in the blanks with what I thought was fitting or what people may type into a search bar. For example, for this post I would fill in the blanks as such:

Title: All-in-one SEO pack

Description: A brief post detailing startatnothing.com blog author’s clumsy approach at optimizing search engine results.

Keywords: SEO, search engine optimization, SEO help, SEO software, optimization software, optimizing search results, etc…

I repeated this process for each of our posts and the whole time I was thinking “This just seems absurd, it just seems too easy… What was with all the stuff I read about meta-tags and what-not?” But, this was my first attempt at optimizing our search results and I tried, which is important. If anyone has any information, or if you just want to call me an idiot, then please leave a comment. We would really appreciate any feedback regarding SEOs or whatever you have to say.

I’ll write a follow-up post letting everyone know if my attempts made any difference to site traffic. As of right now, we have had approximately 1 visitor…

Since you’re using WP 2.3.x I recommend to leave everything automatic. Just use tags and they will be used at keywords. Only tweak description and title on a by-post basis where it seems necessary. While nearly every version of all in in one is stable and has its features I do recommend upgrading right now to the latest and then from time to time. I also recommend setting up prettier permalinks. Have fun :)
