Expectations

Now that you know what we are trying to do and how we are trying to do it, I would like to explain exactly what we expect from our endeavor.

Kevin and I consider ourselves to be pretty smart people, although we do a lot of things that would make a good argument for the contrary. But, we understand that in order to be successful we’re going to have to work really hard, and that it’s going to take a lot of time for us to even think about meeting our goals.

What we do not expect:

  • We don’t expect things to happen very quickly. We’re not going to be an overnight success story, obviously. We don’t really know what we’re doing.
  • We don’t expect to get rich. Hopefully, if things go right, we’ll make a few bucks that we can split and maybe afford a pack of gum. But we know we’re not going to live off of this website.
  • We don’t expect to change the world. At least not yet. And definitely not by telling people how bad we are at making money online with a blog.

What we DO expect:

  • We expect to learn a lot. This one’s easy because we have nowhere to go but up. We don’t have any experience with this stuff aside from normal college-kid stuff, like surfing the internet or researching for papers and what have you.
  • We expect to help people. We’re hoping that at least one person cares at all about what we have to say. Hopefully, someone gets something, anything, out of our website, even if it has nothing to do with making money online. But both of our future jobs and our current lives have a great deal to do with helping people, so this gives us another chance to do that.
  • We expect to be received both positively and negatively by readers. You know, we haven’t lived for THAT long, but we’ve experienced enough to know that everything you say or do will affect the people who hear it or see it. That effect will either be positive or negative, depending on the person, and often-times the people who are affected will let you know about it. And that is life…

Goals for our endeavor

When deciding what we were going to do, and how we were going to do it, we decided to write down a few goals. We recommend that you do this, as well, for anything that you try to accomplish. Having a goal in mind is very powerful, and writing it down is very important and underrated. Writing it down makes your goal into a physical entity, and it brings your desired outcome to the forefront of your thoughts. Give it a shot.

So anyway, we sat down to map out our goals for the website and it was much harder than we anticipated. There’s a very good reason for this, though. Neither of us have any idea what goals would be realistic, or too lofty, or too easy. So, we decided to give it a little while until we could make realistic goals that could help us, based on what we saw in the early stages of our blog’s development. However, we did come up with one long-term(ish) goal:

We would like to be making $1000 per month from this website by December 28, 2008.

This goal was set on the date of our first post, December 28, 2007, so in one year we hope to be making $1000. We came up with $1000 as kind of an arbitrary amount that seems a good bit higher than we think we should realistically expect, but it is better to set goals higher because we’ll try harder to reach them. Plus, our goal is written down. Therefore, we can’t change it to a lower amount and feel good about ourselves because we’ll know we basically cheated.

So, there you have it. Now you know exactly what we’re hoping to get out of this. We really hope you’ll keep checking back on the website to see how we’re doing. Or maybe, if you’re the risky type, you can come along for the ride with us and see how you do. If that’s the case, let us know and we can compare notes, no doubt giving us even more examples of what we do wrong.
